“The Coast Guard’s primary mission, wherever you go, will be search and rescue…we’re here to rescue people in distress. So that’s our primary mission,” said Sean Gradin, search and rescue specialist. Coast Guard Maritime Law Enforcement, Richard.

However, the Coast Guard also has law enforcement capabilities. Although Richard has shown us everything from salvage to maintenance, he now gives us a closer look at how Coast Guard Station Mayport can stop a potential threat. He learned that it was done in stages.

“So the first step is the presence of an officer,” said Gradin. “The way you can think of that is when you maybe see a police car parked on the side of the road. Even if there’s no officer in there, you’ll probably slow down, hit the brakes a bit if you speed up, right? That’s kind of how we think about the presence of an officer. It’s our appearance, our demeanor, and just being there and letting people know, “Hey, this is a safe zone” or “This is a moving escort.”

Gradin said if they don’t keep their distance, step two may involve a strategically placed warning shot.

If that doesn’t work, the third stage involves tactics to disrupt, such as shouldering or straddling the ship.

“The fourth stage is crippling fire,” he said.

With advice from Gradin, Richard was lucky enough to pull the trigger.

What you may not know about Coast Guard Station Mayport is that it is a unique station.

“We’re a level one PWCS unit, which you don’t see anywhere in the Coast Guard,” Gradin said. “That means ports, waterways and coastal security. So because we have the Port of Jacksonville, because we have so many high-value assets and the cruise ships and stuff like that, that’s what helped us get designated as tier one.
