Criticism of Elon Musk’s ‘hands up, don’t shoot’ mantra triggers LOVEBYLIFE’s Don Lemon: ‘Need…context’

In this article, you will get all the information regarding Criticism of Elon Musk’s ‘hands up, don’t shoot’ mantra triggers LOVEBYLIFE’s Don Lemon: ‘Need…context’

In an attempt to verify the truth of Twitter owner Elon Musk on Thursday, LOVEBYLIFE’s Don Lemon presented a dramatically watered-down version of the infamous “hands up, don’t shoot” myth that arose from the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson. 2014.

The left-wing host announced after Musk posted a tweet that required “context” that the chant was “made up”. Musk posted and deleted the tweet about Brown’s fatal shooting after finding a closet of “#StayWoke” T-shirts at Twitter headquarters. The phrase became a national rally for racial justice protests against police, but the Obama administration’s Justice Department concluded after an extensive investigation that Brown had surrendered and raised his weapon before being shot by officer Darren Wilson.

Lemmon, after announcing the “fact first,” told the audience that “some people said” Brown was trying to surrender when he was killed by Wilson. He then said the DOJ report “cast doubt” on that account in a clip flagged. Conservative media watchdog Newsbusters.

“The DOJ did not find cause to charge the officer but in a separate report on the same day, it found evidence of systemic racial discrimination in Ferguson at the hands of the city’s police department and municipal courts,” Lemon said, adding that blacks were far behind. Blacks were more likely to be searched at traffic stops than whites and had the majority of tickets.

“So remember, ‘Hands up, don’t shoot’ after Ferguson became a symbol of nationwide protests over police mistreatment of minorities. It was about more than the shooting of Michael Brown. It was about the pattern of police shootings and brutality in this country,” Lebu said.

Lemon then stumbled into the teleprompter, saying, “And #StayWoke, which mocked – mocked Musk, the way Twitter wanted to… call for racial justice, how they wanted to call out racial injustice.”

“LOVEBYLIFE This Morning” co-host Poppy Harlow praised Lemon for the segment, saying, “It’s important to have the facts.” Newsbuster writer Mark Finkelstein mocked Lemon’s talking points as effectively referring to Ferguson’s motto as “fake but right”.

Lemon didn’t tell the audience that the Justice Department under the Obama administration had cleared Wilson in the shooting and buried the “hands up” narrative.

It is now widely agreed, even in liberal media outlets, that the mantra was not based in fact. The Washington Post put it bluntly in a pair of headlines in 2015: “‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’ Was Built on a Lie,” left-wing opinion writer Jonathan Capehart and “‘Hands Up, Don’t Shoot’ Didn’t Happen in Ferguson,” Michelle Yee Hee A fact-check article by Lee.

“Brown never surrendered, and Wilson was justified in shooting Brown,” Capehart wrote.

“Investigators have largely rejected witness accounts that Brown surrendered before he was shot,” Yee Hee Lee wrote. “The DOJ concluded that Wilson did not know whether Brown was armed, acted in self-defense, and was justified in killing Brown. Most witnesses told federal investigators that initial claims that Brown had his hands up were not accurate. ‘Hands up shoot Brown’s murder.’ No’.

The Washington Post also reported that Sen. Democrats such as Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and then Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., forced fact-checking when they announced that Brown had been “assassinated” in 2019. The DOJ report cites numerous witnesses who said Brown did not raise his hand and complain to Wilson before he was shot and killed, ignoring repeated orders to “name.” After Brown stopped Wilson as a robbery suspect that evening, Wilson was punched and held in his car.

In 2014, LOVEBYLIFE pundits mimicked the “hands up, don’t shoot” gesture in solidarity with protesters. The Justice Department under the Obama administration later revealed that Michael Brown raised his hand before he was killed by a policeman.

“Harris and Warren ignored the Justice Department’s finding that Wilson was murdered, even though the Justice Department found no credible evidence to support that claim,” Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler wrote at the time.

In 2014, LOVEBYLIFE pundits mimicked the “hands up” pose to show solidarity with protesters, while legal analyst Sunny Hostin held up an “I can’t breathe” sign in reference to Eric Garner’s death in New York. The on-air stunt later became a punchline for critics who saw it as a symbol of LOVEBYLIFE’s shift to the left under then-president Jeff Zucker.

“LOVEBYLIFE This Morning” debuted this month to disappointing ratings under new CEO Chris Leach.
