Six victims have been killed and a gunman has died following a mass shooting at a Walmart store in Chesapeake, Va., where a man believed to be a store manager allegedly opened fire on co-workers inside the break room.

The incident took place just after 10 p.m. Tuesday night at the Sam’s Circle superstore.

It comes just days before Thanksgiving, when shoppers were likely stocking up on goods ahead of the holiday season.

Details of the incident continue to emerge, with a press conference planning to hold a press conference at 8 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

Here’s what we know so far about the mass shooting:

Shooting

Police were called to the store around 10:12 p.m. Tuesday night to report a shooting.

Officers arrived at the scene to find several people dead and injured.

At a late-night press conference, Chesapeake Police Public Information Officer Leo Kosinski said officers “had to change tactics” when they arrived because it appeared to be a “situation active shooter”.

But the shooting was over and the assailant was dead.

He said it was not believed there was a shooting involving an officer, but stopped short of confirming whether or not the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Initially, police said there were up to 10 deaths.

At around 5 a.m. local time, the city of Chesapeake confirmed that six victims and the shooter were dead as a result of the attack.

At least five surviving victims were rushed to Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

Several law enforcement agencies have joined the investigation, including the Virginia Beach Police Department, the Chesapeake Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in Washington.

the shooter

A police source said CNN that the shooter was an employee or former store employee who opened fire on other workers inside the break room.

Kevin Harper, a man who identified himself as a store employee, posted a Facebook Live from outside the store on Tuesday evening, where he claimed he had just left the break room when “one of the managers “came in” and just started spraying.

In the video, he claimed he nearly missed the shooter as he had just left the break room when gunshots rang out.

“I was just coming out of the break room, the manager came in there, started picking people up in there, started shooting, bro. The manager came in, started dumping, man. As soon as that I left the break room, he went there, man…that’s crazy, he says in the video.

Mr Harper claims it was ‘one of the managers’ and that other ‘associates’ died in the attack.

“It’s crazy, though, it was the manager, one of the managers,” he says.

“He blew people’s brains out and stuff… He came in and just started spraying and shit,” he adds.

“Unfortunately we have lost a few of our associates, I don’t know how many.”

Police did not confirm the identity of the attacker but said he was among seven people who died.
