Internet sleuths frustrated with the lack of substantial updates in the University of Idaho murder investigation have taken to Reddit to share their theories about what happened on the night of the 13th november.

Following a Wednesday press conference marked by a lack of notable developments, the Reddit subchannels MoscowMurders and IdahoMurders have amassed more than 43,000 members discussing the case daily.

In the forums, people from across the country are taking part in the investigation into the murders of Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen in their off-campus rental home in Moscow.

Some posts contain entirely speculative information and have already been debunked by authorities, while other users recalled that the police were doing their job and that the case was “not a 60-minute CSI crime show”.

Although the posts are filtered as ‘speculation’, ‘information’, ‘questions’ and ‘theories’, misinformation about the investigation, potential motives for the murder and people the police have already ruled out as suspects continue to proliferate.

The families of the murdered students have already pleaded with people to spread rumors online to stop them, saying the rampant speculation only hurts the investigation.

“All the noise is really hurting families,” said a friend of Kristi and Steve Goncalves, Kaylee’s parents. The Independent. “And it takes police down paths that aren’t real and away from those that are.”

Chapin’s parents, Stacy and Jim Chapin, told the NBC affiliate ROI5 that drugs or a love triangle were not involved in the murders.

“Rumors and speculation continue to circulate about the ongoing investigation,” Moscow police said last week.

“MPD warns the public not to trust rumors and remains committed to keeping the public informed. We urge to rely on official channels for accurate information.

Authorities gave a press conference on Wednesday with virtually no updates, but said more than 1,000 pieces of information had been received and 190 interviews had been conducted.

Captain Roger Lanier said the department believes the attack was targeted but will not release information on why he thinks so.

“You’re going to have to trust that at this point because we’re not going to disclose why we think that,” he said.

The FBI, Idaho State Police, and Moscow Police Department allocated $1 million to the case and assigned more than 130 officers and agents and a few behavior analysts to work on it.
