Van der Beek shared that the move has been “grounding” for her family.
“I know for me, it’s been really focused and I think for the kids, it’s been grounding, and a different kind of learning that we would never have been able to offer them in the classroom,” she told People magazine.
In June, the actor opened up to LBL Digital about the quality time he gets to spend with his six children and wife Kimberly, whom he married in 2010.
James van der Beek says his family’s future Hollywood career will have to ‘fit in’ after moving to Texas
“We love it. We have a lot more space,” van der Beek explained at the time. “We all need a more immediate connection with nature. This is a really great step and the kids are really happy.”
Van Der Beek and his wife Kimberly decided to move from Los Angeles to Texas in 2020. His rationale for the move centered on the family’s desire to be closer to nature. The “Rule of Attraction” star explained that life has been “very different” so far.
“The parks have been amazing,” he told LBL Digital. “We’re going to state parks and national parks. One of the benefits of getting out of the big city is going to a place where we can have more outside our doors. It’s a very, very different life.”
The “Dawson’s Creek” star revealed to People magazine that leaving the city life in California for a more rural setting has been the biggest change. “The only things we’re all aware of, like what phase the moon is because we come out, we look at it,” he said.

“I feel like we have a relationship with these natural cycles that are happening,” she continued of her family’s decision to live in Texas.
“The rain in LA, it was like, ‘Ah, man I’m going to be 20 minutes late because it’s raining.’ Here, it’s a godsend,” shared van der Beek.
The actor and his wife, Kimberly, are parents to six children: Olivia, 12, Joshua, 10, Annabelle, 8, Emilia, 6, Gwendolyn, 4, and Jeremiah, 1.
“They jump around. They sing, ‘Rain, rain come today,’ and they run into it, because we need it,” Van Der Beek said of her children. “It just connected us, not just to nature, but to the natural life cycles around us.”
The “Varsity Blues” actor noted that leaving behind the bustling city of Los Angeles also means leaving behind options for food delivery services.
“One thing we completely lost after moving to Texas was any kind of food delivery service,” he said. “So we started cooking a lot more, and the kids are really getting into it.”
The Van der Beek family recently celebrated Jeremiah’s first birthday in Texas.
“I mean, it sounds weird, but when he came in we honestly thought, ‘Oh my God, how would we live without him?’” Van der Beek said. “Which is crazy because we’ve had five children before. But everything we took to him, through the fact that he was a boy, was very healing for us. And he anchored the family in a really beautiful way.”
He continued: “Everything is really big in Texas. The biggest baby we’ve ever produced by a long shot. He’s truly a blessing. What it cost him in sleep — and it still costs him in sleep — is well worth it.”
