In this article, you will get all the information regarding Subway mayors are calling for leveling to be “hardwired” into law

The proposal would change the current competitive bidding system, in which various cities and municipalities bid for state money, to more long-term funding schemes, it said.

The move takes place on Wednesday 25 January in the run-up to the Convention of the North at Manchester Central – a gathering of business, political and civil society leaders from across the North.

Speakers will include the Leveling Up Secretary, Michael Gove MP, and Shadow Secretary and Wigan MP Lisa Nandy.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “Hardwiring alignment with UK law would take us out of politics via press release and start tackling unequal living standards in our country.

“Our own history has shown us that all too often the North struggles to get to the top of the government’s to-do list – regardless of which political party is in charge. That is why we need to hardwire alignment with UK law and unlock the potential of the North to help the whole country thrive.”

Steve Rotheram, Subway Mayor of the Liverpool City area, added: “For every minute taken on the approximately two-hour train journey from the Liverpool City area to London, household income per capita falls by £155.

“Delivering proper leveling – which should be more about tackling ingrained inequalities than vanity projects and photo ops in shiny buildings – must transcend party politics.”

Support for the move comes from:

Last week the government announced the latest winners of the Leveling Up Fund, with some local authorities receiving funding while others lost.

Critics claim the money being spent is aimed at areas with Conservative MPs or councils, which the government denies. Rishi Sunak said this was “simply untrue”.

Leveling Up secretary Michael Gove insisted the latest investment round was “specifically aimed at the North, Midlands, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland”.

It was one of the biggest news stories of our time – and it’s still not over. So what did Boris Johnson know about the infamous Downing Street parties? With fresh revelations from our source number 10, in their own words, listen to the inside story…
