NASSAU COUNTY, Florida. – The National Weather Service will determine if a tornado has swept through two Nassau County neighborhoods on Old Nassauville Road.
Several homes in one neighborhood were damaged by strong winds on Sunday.
About six homes in the Sandy Pointe Preserve subdivision in Fernandina Beach suffered damage to the fence, roof or screened pool cover Sunday morning.
Across the street in the Creekstone subdivision, one of the houses has a damaged fence.
As Dan Beckwith begins to pick up his now downed fence, workers are busy on his roof covering a recent hole caused by storms.
“I grew up in Kansas, so I know that when the wind starts blowing really hard you have to move, so I told the kids the wind starts picking up. We have everyone in the closet,” did he declare.
The owner of another home said he heard screaming around 9.30pm on Sunday evening. He said the windows were shaking and it sounded like a train, but it didn’t last long.
“We’ve been in Florida for 12 years and we’ve never had damage like this, even with hurricanes,” Beckwith said.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the area around 9 p.m.
Beckwith said he was glad nothing more serious happened to his house or his neighbors. But he said he now fears his insurance company will repair all his damage.
“Our insurance company is one of the companies leaving Florida. So that caused me some initial concerns. And then also the company that actually handles the claim is the company that buys out our company. Obviously I’m concerned about how it works,” Beckwith said.
Downed trees and power outages were also reported in southeast Georiga.
News4JAX has received photos showing a roof after it was blown off a gas station in Manor, just southwest of Waycross. No tornadoes were reported, but severe storms were reported in the area.
